More information on Grand Lodge and the origin

 

The Grand Lodge of Masons of the Republic of Liberia is the first independent or self-created Grand Lodge in  Africa.

 

There are now (19) Nineteen Subordinate Lodges, with a total Membership of (1,750) One thousand Seventeen Hundred Fifty. The Annual Communication of Grand Lodge is on the 2nd Monday in December of each year; there are holdenquarterly communications, on the 2nd Monday in March, June and September preceding each of which is held a meeting of the General Committee, on the first Monday in  March, June, September and December; the last of which precedes the Annual Meeting. The General Committee is composed of the elected Grand Officers of Grand Lodge (with the exception of the Grand Master) all Masters of Subordinate Lodges, District Deputy Grand Masters and Honorary Deputy Grand Masters.

 

Grand Lodge is composed of the elected and appointed Grand Officers, Masters and the Pillars of Subordinate Lodges, all actual Past Masters and such Virtual Past Masters who are elected permanent or life members of Grand Lodge.

Free Masonry was banned in Liberia following the 1980 military coup d’etat which took the lives of Most Worshipful Brothers Richard Abrom Henries, Sr.,  Frank E. Tolbert, Sr., William R. Tolbert, Jr., and E. Reginald Townsend.

 

It was not until September 24 – 27 1988, that the Grand Lodge A.F & A.M. formally resumed its practice in Liberia with the holding of its Eighth Grand Convocation in Monrovia, Montserrado County. At the moment, 14 out of the original 19 Subordinate Lodges are reactivated and functioning.
